After a hot, dry summer, some trees in Birmingham have already started to change colour. Here are some of the best places in and around the city to enjoy the autumn leaves over the coming weeks.

Sutton Park

One of the largest urban parks in Europe and a National Nature Reserve, Sutton Park has ancient woodland, heathland and pools. Its oaks, birches and beeches put on a fine show in October.

The Lickey Hills

On the southern edge of the city, the Lickey Hills Country Park offers woodland walks and views across Birmingham from Beacon Hill. The mix of trees, including beech and sweet chestnut, gives rich colour.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

The gardens in Edgbaston have trees and shrubs from around the world, including maples known for their vivid reds and oranges.

Winterbourne House and Garden

The University of Birmingham's Edwardian garden in Edgbaston is known for its varied planting and is lovely in autumn.

Cannon Hill Park and the Rea Valley

Cannon Hill Park, which regained its Green Flag this year, and the paths along the River Rea offer easy walks close to the city centre.

Why leaves change colour

As days shorten and temperatures fall, trees stop making chlorophyll, the green pigment they use to capture sunlight. As it breaks down, yellow and orange pigments that were there all along become visible, while some trees produce red pigments. Sunny days and cool nights tend to give the brightest colours.

The effect of drought

Very dry summers can cause some trees to drop their leaves early or turn brown rather than bright colours. The rain forecast this week may help trees hold their leaves a little longer.

Plan your visit

Colours usually peak in the second half of October. Check opening times and any charges before you go.
