Laser tag is one of the most popular group activities in Birmingham, loved by children's birthday parties, stag and hen groups and office teams alike. The city has a surprising variety of arenas, from a giant multi-level venue at Star City to a secret adults-only arena under a Digbeth arcade bar. Here are the best places to play.

Lazer Battlez, Star City

At the Star City leisure complex in Nechells, Lazer Battlez describes itself as the largest multi-level laser tag arena in the UK, with around 11,000 square feet of ramps, walkways and obstacles. It welcomes walk-ins, games last 15 minutes, and it is open to all ages, making it a good choice for families. Star City also has a cinema, restaurants and other activities, so it is easy to make a day or evening of it.

Laser Quest at NQ64, Digbeth

For grown-ups only, NQ64's Laser Quest sits in the basement below its retro arcade bar in Digbeth. The arena is themed around an alien invasion in a dystopian future and takes groups of up to 16 players. Afterwards, head upstairs for classic arcade machines, vintage consoles and game-themed cocktails. It is strictly over-18s.

Teamworks, Fazeley Street

Teamworks, on Fazeley Street in Digbeth, is best known for its indoor go-karting, but it also has dark, multi-level laser tag arenas with ramps, sniper holes and hidden rooms. It is suitable for anyone over the age of six, and children under 12 must be with an adult. Combining karting and laser tag makes it a favourite for parties and corporate events.

NPF Bassetts Pole, Sutton Coldfield

If you would rather play outdoors, NPF Bassetts Pole on the edge of Sutton Coldfield offers outdoor laser tag in jungle-themed woodland, with enemy villages to capture. Players use realistic laser rifles and headsets, and games include modes such as zombie mode. It is suitable for ages five and over, and the site also offers paintball, archery and other activities.

Just beyond the city

Laser Combat in Oldbury, just over the city boundary, has a refurbished multi-level arena using the Helios 2 laser system, with a bar and café on site. It is a short drive from central Birmingham.

Tips for a great game

Wear comfortable clothes and trainers, as you will be running, ducking and climbing. Dark clothing helps you blend into the arena. Most venues provide vests and guns and give a safety briefing before each game.

For parties, book early, especially at weekends and in school holidays, and check whether the venue offers party rooms or food packages. Age limits vary, from all ages at Star City to over-18s only at NQ64.

Which to choose?

For families and walk-in fun, Star City is hard to beat. For a night out with friends, NQ64's adults-only arena and bar is the most atmospheric. Teamworks is ideal if you want to combine laser tag with karting, and NPF Bassetts Pole is the choice for anyone who wants to play outdoors among the trees.

Prices, opening hours and age rules can change, so always check with the venue before you go.
