The University of Birmingham has been named the Daily Mail University of the Year 2027, and has climbed seven places to 13th in the paper's university guide, its highest ever position.

The award recognises the university's student outcomes, student experience, educational innovation and investment in the future. The guide ranks 128 universities.

Graduates in demand

Alastair McCall, editor of the Daily Mail University Guide, praised Birmingham's record on graduate employment.

"A place to study at the University of Birmingham is rightly highly prized. In a period where graduate jobs are becoming harder to find, Birmingham graduates remain highly sought after," he said.

He also highlighted Pathways to Birmingham, the university's fair access scheme for widening the range of students it admits, and said its combination of research, teaching and sporting and social facilities on an attractive campus should make Birmingham "part of any university conversation in homes across the country".

Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Tickell said the award reflected the university's approach of combining academic excellence with employability, wellbeing, belonging and personal development.

The recognition followed the university's first place in the Russell Group in July's National Student Survey.
