With heavy rain and blustery winds forecast this week, and the storm season getting under way, here are some simple steps to stay safe.

Before the weather arrives

  • Check the Met Office forecast and warnings for your area.
  • Secure loose items in the garden, such as trampolines, furniture and bins.
  • Clear leaves from gutters and drains so rainwater can flow away.
  • Charge phones and keep a torch and spare batteries at hand.

On the roads

  • Slow down and leave at least double the normal gap in the rain.
  • Watch out for fallen branches and debris after strong winds.
  • Take extra care on exposed stretches of road, where high-sided vehicles, cyclists and motorcyclists can be blown off course.
  • Never drive through flood water. It can be deeper than it looks and hide dangers.

Walking and cycling

Avoid walking under trees in strong winds, and take care near rivers and canals, where banks can be slippery and water levels can rise quickly after heavy rain.

Power cuts

If you have a power cut, call 105 from any phone to reach your local electricity network operator for free. People who rely on electricity for medical equipment, or who are older or disabled, can join the Priority Services Register for extra support during power cuts.

Fallen trees and blocked roads

Fallen trees on public land or roads can be reported to Birmingham City Council. If a tree has brought down power lines, stay well away and call 105 or 999.

Look out for others

Check on older neighbours and people who live alone, who may need help during bad weather.

After the storm

Take photographs of any damage before clearing up, and contact your insurer as soon as possible. Be wary of cold callers offering to carry out repairs.
