Birmingham Newman University has been named University of the Year for Teaching Quality in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027.

The university, in Bartley Green, also rose 27 places to 80th in the guide's overall ranking, making it the fastest rising university in the region. It was named University of the Year for Social Inclusion in the previous year's guide.

A run of good results

The award follows several other successes for the university in 2026. It was ranked first in the UK for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey in July, and it was the fastest riser in the Guardian University Guide 2027, climbing to 35th.

It was also named Nurse Education Provider of the Year for pre-registration courses at the Student Nursing Times Awards, and won silver for lecturers and teaching quality at the WhatUni Student Choice Awards. It has been nominated for University of the Year at the UK Social Mobility Awards, which will be decided in October.

What the Vice-Chancellor said

Professor Jackie Dunne MBE, Vice-Chancellor, said: "It is an honour to have earned such prestigious recognition from a leading benchmark of quality within higher education."

She added that the award and the university's rise in the rankings were "a powerful endorsement of both the teaching quality we offer, and our commitment to believing in the potential of everyone who walks through our doors."
