Heavy rain is forecast to cross the country on Wednesday, and people living near rivers and streams in Birmingham are being reminded that they can sign up for free flood warnings.

The forecast

The Met Office says heavy rain will move across the UK on Wednesday, bringing a fresher feel, followed by sunny spells and showers. For Birmingham, the chance of rain on Wednesday is 95 per cent or more, with gusts of up to 29 miles per hour.

After a very dry summer and September, the ground in many places is hard, and heavy rain can run off quickly rather than soaking in, which can cause surface water flooding on roads and in low-lying areas.

Sign up for flood warnings

The Environment Agency's free flood warning service sends alerts by phone, text or email when flooding is expected from rivers. You can sign up online or by calling Floodline on 0345 988 1188.

There are three levels of warning:

  • Flood alert: flooding is possible, be prepared
  • Flood warning: flooding is expected, take action
  • Severe flood warning: danger to life

Surface water flooding

Flooding from heavy rain overwhelming drains is harder to predict than river flooding, and the Environment Agency does not issue specific warnings for it. Keep an eye on Met Office weather warnings and local news.

Simple steps

  • Clear leaves from drains and gutters near your home.
  • Never walk or drive through flood water. Just 30 centimetres of moving water can float a car.
  • Move valuables upstairs if flooding is expected.
  • Know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water.

Report problems

Blocked road drains and gullies can be reported to Birmingham City Council. Flooding from sewers should be reported to Severn Trent.
