Winter Fuel Payment qualifying week ends today
Payments of up to 300 pounds arrive in November or December for those who qualify.
Today is the last day of the qualifying week for this winter's Winter Fuel Payment, which helps older people with the cost of heating their homes.
The payment for winter 2026 to 2027 is based on people's circumstances during the week of 21 to 27 September 2026. To qualify, you must have been born on or before 27 June 1960.
How much it is worth
The payment is worth between 100 and 300 pounds, depending on your age and who you live with. Households with someone aged 80 or over receive a higher amount.
The income threshold
Since last winter, people with a taxable income of more than 35,000 pounds a year still receive the payment, but HM Revenue and Customs recovers it later through the tax system, either by changing their tax code or through their Self Assessment tax return. People in that position can choose to opt out of receiving it.
When it will be paid
Most people who qualify do not need to do anything, because the payment is made automatically. Letters explaining how much you will get are sent out in October or November, and payments are normally made in November or December.
Some people need to make a claim, for example if they have never claimed the State Pension or other benefits, or live abroad. Details are on the Government's website.
Check Pension Credit
Age UK and other charities are urging older people to check whether they are entitled to Pension Credit, which tops up weekly income for pensioners on low incomes. Thousands of eligible pensioners in Birmingham are thought to miss out. Getting Pension Credit can also unlock other help, including the Warm Home Discount and help with council tax and housing costs.
Staying warm this winter
The energy price cap rises by 4 per cent on 1 October. The NHS advises older people to heat their homes to at least 18C, especially in rooms where they spend most time, as cold homes can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections.
