Tammy Abraham scored twice as Aston Villa beat Coventry City 3-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Villa, who entered the competition in the third round because of their European commitments, now face an away trip to Bournemouth.

How the goals went in

Abraham gave Villa the lead in the seventh minute, racing on to a through ball and slotting home. Coventry were level just before the half-hour when Victor Torp curled a superb free-kick into the top corner.

Villa went back in front five minutes before the break. Ross Barkley glanced in a header from Ibrahim Mbaye's corner, and Abraham settled the tie on 59 minutes, sweeping in his second of the night.

  • Aston Villa: Abraham 7, 59; Barkley 40

New faces settling in

The win was an encouraging night for a squad that has changed a great deal over the summer. Mbaye, who supplied the corner for Barkley's goal, was one of the last additions of a busy transfer window, as Villa rebuilt after a number of senior departures.

The Carabao Cup gives Unai Emery's side another route to silverware in a season that also includes the Premier League and the Champions League.
