Donald Trump has won the American presidential election, defeating the Democratic vice-president Kamala Harris, four years after losing the White House.

The election was held on 5 November, and Trump's victory became clear in the early hours of 6 November, American time.

The result

Trump won the key battleground states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina and Wisconsin, securing a clear majority in the electoral college. He is also on course to win the national popular vote, for the first time.

The Republicans have won control of the Senate.

A remarkable comeback

Trump, 78, will be the first president since Grover Cleveland in the 19th century to serve two terms that are not consecutive. He will also be the oldest person to be sworn in as president.

His victory comes despite being convicted in a criminal case in New York earlier this year, and surviving an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania in July.

Harris concedes

Harris became the Democratic candidate in July, after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race amid concerns about his age. She conceded defeat in a speech at Howard University in Washington, saying the fight for the ideals behind her campaign would go on.

Trump's promises

In his victory speech in Florida, Trump said he would help the country heal, and promised a golden age of America.

During the campaign, he promised to deport large numbers of illegal immigrants, impose tariffs on imports and end the war in Ukraine quickly.

Why he won

Exit polls suggest the cost of living and immigration were among voters' biggest concerns. Trump improved his support among many groups, including Hispanic voters and young men.

World reaction

The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, congratulated Trump and said the special relationship would continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic.

European leaders are concerned about his approach to Ukraine, NATO and trade. Economists warn that tariffs could hurt exporters in Britain and Europe.

Next steps

Trump will be sworn in on 20 January. He is expected to begin announcing members of his cabinet in the coming days.
