Birmingham is celebrating South Asian Heritage Month, which runs from 18 July to 17 August, with events across the city honouring the cultures, histories and contributions of its South Asian communities.

The month celebrates people with roots in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

A city shaped by its communities

As one of the UK's most diverse cities, Birmingham is home to thriving South Asian communities who have helped shape its social, cultural and economic life for generations.

The programme includes community-led events, cultural performances, exhibitions, workshops and chances to learn more about the stories and achievements of South Asian residents, past and present.

"Our city's diversity is one of its greatest strengths," said Councillor Deborah Harries, Cabinet Member for Culture.

She encouraged residents to take part and "learn more about the stories, cultures and experiences that are such an important part of Birmingham's identity".

A calendar of events is available on the South Asian Heritage Trust website, and community groups and cultural organisations across the city are running their own events throughout the month.
