Police have released CCTV images of a man they want to identify after a man was stabbed on a bus in Birmingham city centre.

The attack happened on Corporation Street at about 10.30pm on Tuesday 13 October. Detectives believe the victim was chased onto the bus by a group before he was stabbed.

He suffered serious injuries but has since been discharged from hospital.

Two charged

Two people have already been charged in connection with the attack. Dello Alphaoumar, 21, has been charged with violent disorder. A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named because of his age, has been charged with violent disorder, threatening a person with a blade and possession of a hammer.

A 16-year-old boy who was also arrested has been released on police bail while inquiries continue.

Hooded man in the images

The images released on Wednesday show a man in a hooded top. In one he is pictured smiling. Officers say they want to speak to him as part of their investigation.

A police spokesperson said: "We're asking for your help to identify this person as we continue to investigate the stabbing of a man on a bus in Birmingham city centre."

"We have arrested and charged two people following the incident where it is believed the man was chased onto the bus on Corporation Street. The victim suffered serious injuries but has been released from hospital."

"As part of the ongoing investigation, officers are now asking for your help to identify the man in these images. We'd also want to hear from anyone who saw what happened or who has footage."

How to help

Anyone who recognises the man, or who saw the attack, is asked to contact police on 101 or through Live Chat on the force's website, quoting log 5780 of 13 October.

The force has also set up an online page where people can upload photographs, video or other information that might help the investigation. Information can be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Corporation Street is one of the city centre's busiest streets, running from New Street towards the Law Courts and carrying trams and dozens of bus routes. At 10.30pm on a weeknight it would still have had people heading home from the city centre, and police say they are keen to hear from anyone who was on the bus or nearby and may have filmed the incident on a phone.

Stabbings on public transport remain rare, but violence in the city centre has been a growing concern for residents and businesses. Police and the council have stepped up patrols in recent months, and extra officers work in the city centre at weekends.

Anyone who sees a crime happening on a bus should tell the driver if it is safe to do so, and call 999 in an emergency. Bus companies say CCTV on board their vehicles is regularly used to help police identify suspects.
