The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Al Gore. The prize was announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo on 12 October 2007.

The citation

The citation reads: "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change". They share the prize equally.

The laureates

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was founded in 1988. Al Gore was born in 1948 in Washington, D.C., the United States.

Why it matters

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change brings together thousands of scientists to assess climate research, and the former American vice-president Al Gore has campaigned on the issue, including through the film An Inconvenient Truth.

The prize

The prize is worth 10 million Swedish kronor, divided between the laureates. It will be presented in Oslo on 10 December, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite whose will founded the prizes in 1895.
