Jackson puts the team first after Villa's record night
The striker wanted the penalty for a hat-trick, but Emery says Barkley's record from the spot made him the taker.
Nicolas Jackson says winning matters more than his own goals after his first-half double set Aston Villa on the way to their record 6-0 win over Fenerbahce.
The Senegal striker was denied the chance of a hat-trick when Ross Barkley stepped up to take a second-half penalty after Johan Manzambi was brought down.
"Hopefully next time"
Jackson admitted he had wanted the spot-kick. "The most important thing is we win. Hopefully next time I'll get the hat-trick," he said. "Today was very important as we had not won at home."
The 25-year-old, signed from Chelsea in the summer in a deal worth an initial £47.5m, has now scored five goals in eight appearances. He struck twice in eight first-half minutes, after Manzambi had marked his 21st birthday by opening the scoring.
Why Barkley took the penalty
Unai Emery explained that the club has a clear plan for penalties. "We have our plan with the penalty shooter, and today the responsibility to shoot was for Ross Barkley," he said.
"We have to be so demanding as well there, because here we had some moments during the four years I am here. Sometimes we were missing some very important penalties, and now Ross Barkley has a high average scoring goals."
He praised Jackson's all-round contribution. "Jackson is doing a fantastic job. He's scoring, he's working defensively, helping the team. This is very important and maybe in the future he can shoot as well when we have a penalty."
Confidence at last
The win was Villa's first at home this season, after league defeats by Arsenal and Nottingham Forest and a draw with Brentford. Emery said the result would bring confidence. "We achieved the first win at home and how we could manage with different players," he said. "I think a lot of very good things happened through the good result, giving us confidence and making us demanding to keep it for the next matches."
The young trio of Manzambi, Jackson and Ibrahim Mbaye started together for the first time and gave supporters an exciting glimpse of the future. All three were among the summer signings as Villa reshaped their squad after winning the Europa League in May.
Next up
Villa have won both of their Champions League league-phase games so far. They travel to Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday before hosting Viking in the Champions League next week.
The emphatic win also put to rest some concerns about the atmosphere at Villa Park while the North Stand is being rebuilt, with capacity reduced to about 37,000. Villa have now won 19 of their 21 European home matches under the Spaniard.
