Aston Villa face Turkish giants Fenerbahce on Wednesday 14 October in their next Champions League match, with kick-off at 8pm UK time.

How Villa have started in Europe

Villa began their Champions League campaign with a 3-2 home win over Club Brugge on 8 September. The match was a landmark for John McGinn, who became the club's all-time top scorer in European competitions.

The league phase

The Champions League now uses a single league phase, in which each of the 36 clubs plays eight matches against different opponents, four at home and four away. The top eight go straight through to the last 16, while those finishing ninth to 24th enter a knockout play-off round.

About Fenerbahce

Fenerbahce, based in Istanbul, are one of Turkey's biggest clubs, with a large and passionate following around the world. They have won the Turkish league many times and regularly play in European competition.

Villa's European pedigree

Villa are in the Champions League after winning the Europa League last season, their first major European trophy since the 1982 European Cup, when they beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in Rotterdam.

Before then

Villa's first game after the international break is a Premier League home match against Brentford on 10 October. They head into the break after a 3-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur.

Tickets

Demand for Champions League tickets is high, and Villa usually give priority to season ticket holders and members. Fans should check the club's website for sales dates and travel advice.
