Curzon Street station takes shape
More than 556 beams are going in to carry the platforms of Birmingham's HS2 terminus.
Work on Birmingham's new HS2 station at Curzon Street is moving above ground, with the deck that will carry the platforms now being built.
Engineers finished the last of more than 2,000 concrete piles that form the station's foundations in March 2026. By June, the first of more than 556 huge concrete beams had been lifted into place to support the platforms. Some are up to 34 metres long and weigh as much as 58 tonnes.
What the station will look like
Curzon Street will stretch for more than 400 metres between Moor Street station and Millennium Point in Eastside. It will have seven platforms under a large arched roof inspired by the railway architecture of the Victorian age.
The station is being built next to the old Curzon Street station building, a Grade I listed structure that opened in 1838 as the terminus of the London and Birmingham Railway, one of the first intercity lines in the world.
When will trains run?
HS2 has said services between Old Oak Common in west London and Birmingham Curzon Street are expected to begin between May 2036 and October 2039. The timetable has been pushed back several times, and the Government has asked the company to bring costs and delays under control.
Regeneration around the station
The area around Curzon Street is expected to change dramatically. New homes, offices and public spaces are planned, and the Metro is being extended towards Digbeth past the station. The council and developers hope the station will become the centre of a new district linking the city centre with Digbeth and Eastside.
Jobs and skills
HS2 construction in and around Birmingham has provided thousands of jobs, and many local people have been trained through apprenticeships on the project.
Watching progress
The site can be seen from surrounding streets, and HS2 regularly publishes photographs and updates on its progress.
