The clocks go back one hour at 2am on Sunday 25 October, marking the end of British Summer Time. The extra hour in bed comes with darker evenings, and road safety groups are reminding everyone to take extra care.

Why darker evenings matter

When the clocks change, the evening rush hour suddenly takes place in fading light or darkness. Road safety charities say the weeks after the clocks go back often see a rise in collisions involving people walking and cycling, as drivers adjust to the lower light.

Advice for drivers

  • Check that all your lights are working and your windscreen is clean inside and out.
  • Slow down in residential areas and near schools, especially at home time.
  • Watch out for people crossing between parked cars and for cyclists, who can be hard to see.
  • Allow extra time on wet roads, as stopping distances can double.

Advice for people walking and cycling

  • Wear something bright or reflective after dark.
  • Cyclists must by law have a white front light and a red rear light, plus a red rear reflector, when riding at night.
  • Cross at designated crossings where possible and make eye contact with drivers.

Children and the school run

Parents are encouraged to talk to children about staying visible on the way home from school and after-school activities, and to consider reflective strips on coats and bags.

Winter checks

The autumn clock change is also a good reminder to prepare vehicles for winter: check tyre tread and pressure, top up screenwash and antifreeze, and keep a scraper, torch and warm clothes in the car.

A change for timetables too

Airline winter schedules start at the same time, so travellers flying out of Birmingham Airport that weekend should check their departure times carefully.

When they go forward again

The clocks will go forward again on Sunday 28 March 2027, when British Summer Time returns.
