For the first time since 2022, Birmingham has two teams in the Women's Super League, the top flight of women's football in England.

Aston Villa, who have been in the WSL since 2020, have been joined by Birmingham City, who won promotion as champions of Women's Super League 2 last season. The promotion was confirmed on 2 May.

How they are getting on

Both clubs have found the going tough in the early weeks of the season. After four matches, Birmingham City are 12th and Aston Villa 13th in the 14-team table, both on two points.

On Sunday, Blues drew 3-3 with Crystal Palace, who were promoted alongside them, while Villa lost 4-0 away to Tottenham Hotspur.

A bigger league

The WSL has expanded to 14 teams this season. Charlton Athletic also won promotion, beating Leicester City on penalties in a play-off on 23 May.

The derby

The Second City derby between Villa and Blues is back on the top-flight calendar, giving fans one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures of the season.

A growing game

Women's football has grown rapidly in England since the Lionesses won the European Championship in 2022 and retained it in 2025. Attendances in the WSL have risen, more matches are shown on television, and clubs have invested in their squads and facilities.

Getting involved

There are more opportunities than ever for girls and women to play football in Birmingham, from school and grassroots clubs to walking football. The Birmingham County FA lists clubs and leagues across the city.

Where they play

Villa Women play most of their home matches at Poundland Bescot Stadium in Walsall, with some games at Villa Park. Birmingham City Women play at St Andrew's and other venues. Fans should check the clubs' websites for the latest details.
